Urban sustainability rating tools are fundamental instruments for helping achieve green community goals. They provide integrated accounting of the triple bottom lines of community development, raising awareness and improving the quality of outcomes.
In recent years, a variety of rating tools have emerged with different capabilities and costs, and understanding their strengths and weaknesses can help practitioners select the most appropriate tool. This program will review a dozen rating systems available in North America for cities, planned and existing neighborhoods, transportation and infrastructure, and landscape and parks.
OBJECTIVES:
- Examine the opportunities and benefits of rating community sustainability.
- Determine the range and characteristics of available urban sustainability rating tools.
- Discuss key considerations when selecting a rating tool.
- Review a survey of rating tools and selection criteria, and an understanding of how to apply the criteria.
