Disrobing EBOM – Better than Expected: How to Vaporize the Mystique, Engage people, and Get to the Practical

Though the LEED for Existing Building program is responsible for more LEED-certified square footage than the new construction rating systems, it remains an enigma, if not a thorn in the side, to many green building practitioners (including those who’ve work on EBOM projects).

Launched seven and a half years ago as something of a contorted version of LEED for New Construction, EBOM has evolved to include credits that are a mix of newly invented and experimental performance metrics, vestigial design criteria, and down-to-earth sustainable operations best practices. As a result, wading through the rating system can be confounding, but it also offers some of the best opportunities to better our buildings.

This presentation will provide practical advice on how to successfully approach an EBOM project, with an emphasis on efficiently tackling the elementary criteria to leave more time and resources for creatively managing positive change in the building. More broadly, the session will explore the core tenet of the highest performing buildings: people engagement.

SPEAKER:  Jenny Carney, LEED AP O+M, Principal, YR&G
Jenny heads up YR&G’s Performance & Operations Team and manages the Chicago office. In that role, she oversees YR&G project work related to sustainability strategy development, performance-based benchmarking, corporate sustainability programming, reporting and LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (LEED-EBOM) certification. Jenny has extensive experience helping clients engage key stakeholders, gaining their support while also developing meaningful sustainability goals and strategies based on technical analysis.

Jenny has been deeply involved in the development of the LEED-EBOM Rating System, dating back to the initial pilot phase in 2004. She has served as a primary author of the v2.0, v2008, v2009, and v4 Reference Guides, and helps shape the evolution of the program through her work on various USGBC committees. She currently chairs the Sustainable Sites Technical Advisory Group (SS TAG).
