Members in the News – Bradley Roell, Catherine Werner

Bradley Roell, of Blue Brick Renovation & Construction was featured in a November 23, 2012 Post-Dispatch article about an innovative, efficient and green home currently under construction Creve Coeur. The home includes green building technologies like Structural Insulation Panels (SIPs), solar panels and a geothermal system. Read the entire article here.

Catherine Werner, the City of St. Louis Sustainability Director was featured in a November 28, 2012 article in the Beacon. In the article, Catherine discusses the City’s Sustainability Plan, which scheduled for approval by the mayor’s office in January. Chapter Photo Contest – submissions due December 18

Imagine. Capture. Expose. Celebrate. Participate.
USGBC – Missouri Gateway Chapter is proud to announce our first annual PHOTO CONTEST!

The contest is only open to USGBC – Missouri Gateway Chapter Members. The intent of the contest is to collect images that demonstrate the transformation of the built environment into a more environmentally friendly, prosperous and healthy place to live, work and learn. We look forward to engaging the creativity and ingenuity of our members in this contest. Photos will be used in Chapter marketing materials, publications and on the website.

The competition is open to all USGBC – Missouri Gateway Chapter Members.  There is no entry fee.

November 8, 2012 – Contest Opens
December 18, 2012 – Submissions Due
January 8, 2013 – Winners Announced at Annual State of the Chapter Program


  • First Place – One Year Chapter Membership
  • Second Place – Complimentary Pass to 1 (one) In-Depth Educational Session
  • Third Place – Stainless Steel USGBC – Missouri Gateway Chapter Water Bottle

No image will receive more than one award.

Images will not be returned and will become the property of USGBC – Missouri Gateway Chapter.

Conditions of Entry

1. Digital Entry Requirements

  • File Size – Each image must be between 1- 5 MB in size.
  • Resolution – Each image should be at least 2816 pixels in its longest dimension.
  • File Format – Each image must be entered in JPG format.
  • File Naming – Each image title must be included in the file name (please limit the title to the first twenty letters of the title). File names should not include punctuation. Image name must include the extension of .JPG or .TIFF.
  • Entry Delivery – Each (all) entries must be emailed as an attachment to The body of the e-mail should contain the following information: Photographer’s Name, E-mail Address and Phone Number; Image Title; City, State & Country of Image

2. Entries must have been photographed by, and be owned by, the entrant.

3. The competition is open only to USGBC – Missouri Gateway Chapter Members. There is no entry fee. Each entrant may submit up to 3 images. Please check the Chapter Member Directory for current membership information. 

4. The subject matter must show and promote the implementation of green building concepts, technologies and principles that promote environmentally responsible, prosperous and healthy places to live, work and learn. Photos should celebrate the transformation of the built environment.

5. Entrants grant permission to USGBC – Missouri Gateway to reproduce images for exhibitions, USGBC – Missouri Gateway publications and promotional purposes. All reproductions will become the property of USGBC – Missouri Gateway.  All photographs utilized in USGBC – Missouri Gateway productions will be properly credited to the appropriate person/organization.

6. The decision of the judges is final on all matters relating to the competition. The judges are:

Chapter Board Elections – Nov 8-13

USGBC – Missouri Gateway Chapter Board Elections will take place from Thursday, November 8 through Tuesday, November 13. In order to vote, you must be a current member of the Chapter.

The candidates are:

  • John Aliberti – Engineered Solutions
  • Maren Engelmohr, LEED AP BD+C – HOK
  • Chris Laughman, LEED Green Associate – Graybar Electric Co
  • Erik Lueders, LEED AP O+M – Parkway School District
  • Marjorie Melton, LEED AP BD+C – M3 Engineering Group PC

We will elect three individuals to the Board in general positions. The Board will identify from these newly elected members and the existing members the specific officer assignments through Dynamic Elections. Open positions include; Chair-Elect (1 year term, becomes Chair in 2013 and Past Chair in 2014), Treasurer (2 years), At-Large (2 years).

Ozarks Branch Mixer & LEED Building Tour: Hilton Garden Inn

Interested in connecting with green building professionals in your area while gaining continuing education?

Join us for an Ozarks Branch mixer and tour of the LEED Gold Hilton Garden Inn!

The Ozarks Branch of the U.S. Green Building Council – Missouri Gateway Chapter is reinvigorating efforts in the Springfield area, and we want to hear from you!  Our goal is to create more networking and educational opportunities related to sustainability in the Springfield area. We’ll kick things off with an evening of camaraderie and innovation in action.

The evening will begin with complimentary appetizers and cash bar followed by a brief overview of the Branch’s history and visioning of possibilities for the future.  Attendees will then tour the LEED Gold facility and learn about a number of the hotel’s sustainable features, such as:

  • Solar panels on the roof
  • Solar wall which serves as a heat exchange
  • Geo thermal HVAC
  • High efficiency water and light fixtures
  • Local/regional materials
  • Recycled wood and metal
  • Low VOC content materials to promote healthier indoor environmental quality
  • Food waste composting
  • Biodegradable to-go packaging
  • And more!

LEED Exam Preparation Developer & Instructor RFQ

The U.S. Green Building Council – Missouri Gateway Chapter currently offers LEED exam preparation courses for the LEED Green Associate exam and the LEED AP BD+C exam.  In addition to offering these two selections, we are interested in offering a course focused on the LEED AP Operations + Maintenance exam beginning in 2013. We are currently seeking instructors for all three exam prep courses, as well as the development of a LEED AP O+M exam prep course.
If you are interested in applying to be an instructor for any or all of these courses and/or developing the LEED AP O+M exam prep course, please submit the following via email by 5 pm on Monday, November 26, 2012.
  • Cover letter indicating interest in instructor position, course development, or both
  • Resume and teaching / education development experience
  • Brief description of role on LEED certified projects, including which rating system was pursued
  • Teaching availability if applying for instructor position
  • (3) References
All qualifications must be compiled in (1) PDF file no larger than 5 MB and sent to  RFQ respondents are responsible for ensuring their submissions have been received by USGBC-Missouri Gateway before the deadline of 5 pm, Monday, November 26, 2012.
Each course will be 16 hours of material to be presented by 2 instructors over the course of 2 to 4 sessions.  There will be an instructor stipend of $500 per instructor per course, and a stipend of $500 for LEED AP O+M course development.

City of St. Louis Draft Sustainability Plan

The City of St. Louis Sustainability Plan is now available on the City’s website as a Draft For Public Review. The Plan was developed with the help of a team of experienced consultants over an 18-month period that included both public outreach and community engagement activities.

The City’s Sustainability Director, Catherine Werner, is giving several presentations including one at the Sustainable Cities Summit on November 3 at Washington University in St. Louis. There will be a Public Hearing held by the Planning Commission on November 7, 2012, at 1520 Market Street at 5:30 pm. And written comments will be accepted on the City’s Sustainability Plan through November 14
