Master speaker and sustainable preservation expert, Walter Sedovic, FAIA, LEED AP will explore the intersection of bias, modernism, heritage, memory, and preservation in this evening lecture presented by USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter and Landmarks Association of St. Louis, Inc.

Through a lens of the symbiotic relationship between historic preservation and sustainability, the speaker will discuss:

  • Resolving the applicability of preservation standards to our modernist heritage buildings.
  • Exposure to methods of enhancing performance (energy, durability, adaptability) of heritage buildings.
  • Understanding the inherent paradox of applying National Register standards to modernist buildings.
  • Viewing architectural sustainability through a global lens involving community, culture & memory.

Walter Sedovic FAIA LEED AP has dedicated his career to sustainable preservation and design. His work and firm represent the vanguard of infusing heritage sites with green building approaches and ideologies, turning historic buildings into stellar performers – especially under current building and energy conservation codes – while maintaining authenticity and a visceral connection to each building’s historic and cultural context, its reason for being. Each project provides some measure of enriched educational and stewardship, and strong community ties. Walter is a sought-after speaker nationally and internationally on the subject of Sustainability and Preservation and was the Guest Editor of APTI’s (Association for Preservation Technology International) special edition Bulletin on Sustainable Preservation. His firm has won virtually every national preservation award. Walter has been distinguished with elevation to the American Institute of Architects’ prestigious College of Fellows.
